Septentria (Bruellan: Septentrien), officially the Federal Republic of Septentria (Bruellan: Bundesrepublik Septentrien), is a country comprising of the northern portion of the the Carreon continent with numerous smaller islands. It is one of Adonia's largest country by total area. The nation solely borders New Terrance with numerous island nations surround the nation in nearby waters.
For at least 20,000 years before the first Bruellen settlers arrived in the late 17th century, Septentria was inhabited by indigenous Septentrians, who spoke a regional Dantanaean language. After the discovery of the north western coast by Bruellen explorers in 1640, Carreon's western half was claimed by the Kingdom of Hesse in 1640 and settled through penal transportation to the colony of Grünlun from 21 March 1640. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the nation was explored and an additional four self-governing Colonies were established.
On 25 March 1952, the five colonies now governed under an overseas territory of Bruellen, forming the Federal Republic of Septentria. Since independence, Septentria has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal republican democracy. The republic comprises of five provinces and several territories. The population of 36.4 million is highly urbanised and heavily concentrated along the coast.
Septentria is a developed country and one of the wealthiest in the world, having one of the largest economies in the world. In 2012 Septentria had the world's fourth-highest per capita income, Septentria's military expenditure is the world's 11th-largest. With one of the highest human development index globally, Septentria ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance, such as quality of life, health, education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Septentria is a member of the United Sovereign Nations of the World, and many other international organisations.
History
Over 2,000 years ago Dantanaean people started to inhabit the area, originating from north eastern Althena, making their way to what is now the north coast of Septentria when the ocean levels where much lower than what they are today. The northern more cooler and wetter climatic areas were most desirable for the Dantanaean, with large settlements along rivers found upon Hessen colonisation. Central Septentria remained sparsely populated and remains like that today due to the unhospital desert climate and lack of rainfall although some Dantanaean groups managed to survive in remote locations such as in the Pākurakura Māhina canyon, Lake Tote (Which has seasonal floods), Marea Takataka as well as several other locations.
The nation was first discovered by Hessen discoverer Captain Petrus Reinhold, who was later in charge of the colonisation efforts. The land was named Septentria which in Calibrian means "Great Unknown Northern Lands". The nation remained as a colony for many years under the Kingdom of Hesse and as such was transferred to Bruellen control when the Kingdom of Hesse and the Kingdom of Platz unified in 1817. As the settlers remained largely in the North and North Western areas due to the large fertile areas and plentiful water supplies, cities began to grow in size as immigration from western Althena increased dramatically and only increased when a vast majority would make it rich in the nation's vast gold fields that dramatically boosted the economy of the new colony and made Amand the richest city in the world for 2 years.
By 1952, shortly after the end of the GAW, Septentrian citizens voted to become a federal republic and as such Septentria declared independence from the Brullen federation by March 25 1952. This was largely due to the restrictions placed on the colony in trade, even though during the Global Adonian War the nation grew enormously economically and population wise due to the large manufacturing area which supplied and helped Brullen during the war while hundreds of thousands of refugees and immigrants settled in the larger cities to escape the war as Septentria remained relatively untouched and was deemed one of the safest places to go. It was this large immigration from all over Althena and Euphemia to Septentria that sparked another economic age within the country, several large manufacturing, automotive, money, trade and other companies were set up which ultimately lead to Septentria's rise in power as the most dominate, powerful country in the northern hemisphere even though it was not the largest in terms of population.
Septentria's military is one of Adonia's largest and powerful armies in the world, which have largely been supporting allies in need while also keeping control of it's Cilician Ocean territories which was inherited from western Althenan nations after the GAW. Septentria also has one of the largest humanitarian aid programs in the world, being heavily involved in north eastern Althena and Neridea. Today, the nation is known as one of the most liveable places in the world with very high standards of living, very low unemployment rates and a large economy based around manufacturing, mining, agriculture and tourism.

LGBT Rights
As of 7th June 2011, Septentria passed a law allowing for same-sex couples to be married after several years of already having the same rights such as being able to adopt children and in doing so, became one of the first countries to do so on Carreon. Prior to the passage of this law, the previous government had shown support but did hold a referendum. Large celebrations erupted across the nation in various cities. The law officially came into act on the 14th of June 2011.

Provinces
Septentria is a republic composed of six provinces, one territory (Federal Capital Territory) and several overseas territories such as Whixall Island, the island chain of New Brecon, the Arktiki territory and Willow Islands. In turn, these may be grouped into three main regions: Western Septentria (Grünlun and Golfküste, Central Septentria (Grohalbinsel, Hauptstadt Gebiet and Nord-Golf) and Eastern Septentria (Spärlun and Wüston). Provinces have more autonomy than territories, having responsibility for social programs such as health care, education, and welfare. Together, the provinces collect more revenue than the federal government. Using its spending powers, the federal government can initiate national policies in provincial areas, such as the Septentria Health Act; the provinces can opt out of these, but rarely do so in practice. Equalisation payments are made by the federal government to ensure that reasonably uniform standards of services and taxation are kept between the richer and poorer provinces.

Geography
Septentria 's landmass of -,---,--- square kilometres (-,---,--- sq mi) is on the Carreon-Cilician Plate. Surrounded by the Cilician and Solvanese oceans, it is separated from Eastern Althena by the New Chatum sea, with the Coral Sea lying off the Golfküste coast, Binsel Sea lying between Septentria and New Batavia. Australia has 28,284 kilometres of coastline (excluding all offshore islands and oversea territories), and claims an extensive Exclusive Economic Zone of 6,358,274 square kilometres. This exclusive economic zone does not include the Septentrian Arktici Territory. Mount Hochblassen, claimed to be the world's largest monolith, is located in Wüston. At 4,184 metres, Mount Öfnerspitze on the Great Northern Range is the highest mountain in Septentria and all of Carreon.
Septentria's size gives it a wide variety of landscapes, with subtropical rainforests in the south-west, mountain ranges in the north, north-west and north east, and dry desert in the centre. It is on of the flattest countries, with the oldest and least fertile soils; desert or semi-arid land commonly known as the outback makes up a considerable portion of land. The north, north-west, and western areas have a large temperate climate, ideal for large-scale agriculture. Much of the population lives along the coast, in particular the Northern, North West and Western coasts, however overall, the population density it one of the world's lowest at --.-- per square kilometre.
Northern Septentria is marked by the Great Northern Range, which runs parallel to the coast of Grünlun, Nord-Golf, portions of Grohalbinsel and Spärlun. The name is not strictly accurate, because parts of the range consist of low hills, and the highlands are typically no more than 2,600 metres in height. The coastal uplands and a belt of Brigalow grasslands lie between the coast and the mountains, while inland of the dividing range are large areas of grassland. These include the southern plains of Nord-Golf, and the Große Uplands, Arnspitze Tableland, and Kahlersberg Lands of inland Grünlun. There is a small portion of rainforest in the extreme south-east corner of the country, which continues into the mostly tropical New Terrance.
The landscapes of the southern part of the country, the Southern Lands and the Gulf Country behind the Gulf of Txipala, with their subtropical climate—consist of woodland, grassland, and desert. At the south-west corner of the continent are the sandstone cliffs and gorges of The Holstein, and below that the Lüneburg. To the north of these and inland, lie more areas of grassland: the Wilstermarsch Plains and the Wüston Mulga shrublands. At the heart of the country are the uplands of central Septentria ; prominent features of the centre and south include the inland Steinach, Lauscha and Wurzelbergfarmde, Haina, and the Great Langeberg deserts, with the famous Tagebau Plain on the north eastern coast.
The climate of Septentria is significantly influenced by ocean currents, including the Solvanese Ocean Dipole and the El Niño–Northern Oscillation, which is correlated with periodic drought, and the seasonal tropical low-pressure system that produces cyclones in southern Septentria, particularly the Gulf of Txipala. These factors cause rainfall to vary markedly from year to year. Much of the Extreme southern part of the country has a tropical, predominantly summer-rainfall (monsoon) climate. The Northwest corner of the country has a Alcadean climate. Much of the north is temperate.
Environment
Although a considerable amount of Septentria is semi-arid or desert, it includes a diverse range of habitats from alpine heaths to subtropical tropical rainforests, and is recognised as a megadiverse country. The fungi typify that diversity; the total number that occur in Septentria, including those not yet discovered, has been estimated at around 250,000 species, of which roughly 4% have been described. Because of Carreon's great age, extremely variable weather patterns, and long-term geographic isolation, much of Septentria's biota is unique and diverse. Approximately 93% of flowering plants, 76% of mammals, more than 43% of birds, and 79% of in-shore, temperate-zone fish are endemic.
Septentrian forests are mostly made up of evergreen species, particularly eucalyptus trees in the less arid regions, wattles replace them in drier regions and deserts as the most dominant species. Among well-known Septentrian animals are the monotremes (the platypus and echidna); a host of marsupials, including the kangaroo, koala, and wombat, and birds such as the emu and the kookaburra. Septentria is home to many dangerous animals including some of the most venomous snakes in the world. The dingo was introduced by Septhense people who traded with Indigenous Septentrians around 3000 BCE. Many animal and plant species became extinct soon after first human settlement, including the Septentrian megafauna; others have disappeared since European settlement, among them the Grohalbinsel Tiger.
Many of Grohalbinsel's ecoregions, and the species within those regions, are threatened by human activities and introduced animal, chromistan, fungal and plant species. The federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1997 is the legal framework for the protection of threatened species. Numerous protected areas have been created under the National Strategy for the Conservation of Grohalbinsel's Biological Diversity to protect and preserve unique ecosystems; 72 wetlands are listed under the Famsar Convention, and 19 natural World Heritage Sites have been established.
Protection of the environment is also a major political issue. In 2002, the First Gauck Government signed the instrument of ratification of the Duisden Protocol. Nevertheless, Septentria's carbon dioxide emissions per capita are among the highest in the world, lower than those of only a few other industrialised nations but is significantly declining with the introduction of new wide-spread green technology. Rainfall in Septentria has slightly increased over the past century, both nationwide and for two quadrants of the nation, According to the Bureau of Meteorology's 2009 Septentrian Climate Statement, Septentria had lower than average temperatures in 2009 as a consequence of a La Niña weather pattern, however, "the country's 10-year average continues to demonstrate the rising trend in temperatures, with 2000–2009 likely to rank in the top two warmest 10-year periods on record for Septentria, at 0.50 °C above the long-term average".
Water restrictions are frequently in place in many regions and cities of Septentria in response to chronic shortages due to urban population increases and localised drought. Throughout much of the country, major flooding regularly follows extended periods of drought, flushing out inland river systems, overflowing dams and inundating large inland flood plains, as occurred throughout Western Septentria in 2010, 2011 and 2012 after the 2000s Septentrian drought. However, a large percentage of the population relies on water sourced from the Great Northern Range, with rivers flowing both north into the north Cilician Ocean and south into the great plains of the outback, periodically filling up the great salt lakes in Wüston.

Septentria is a wealthy country with a market economy, a high GDP per capita, and a very low rate of poverty. In terms of average wealth, in 2013, and the nation's poverty rate increased from 3.7 per cent to 5.1 per cent, from 2000/01 to 2013. It was identified by the Credit Suisse Research Institute as the nation with the highest median wealth in the world and the second-highest average wealth per adult in 2013. The Septentrian dollar is the currency for the nation, including Feur Island, Baume Islands, and Berbau Island. With the 2001 merger of the Septentrian Stock Exchange and the Ammand Futures Exchange, the Septentrian Securities Exchange became the tenth largest in the world. Ranked second in the Index of Economic Freedom in 2012 Septentria is the world's eleventh largest economy and has on of the highest per capita GDP (nominal) at $32,234. All of Septentria's major cities fare well in global comparative livability surveys; Hagen has reached first place on multiple occasions as the world's most livable city, followed by Amand, Hanke, and Reiner. Total government debt in Septentria is about $90 billion 5% of GDP in 2010. Septentria has among the highest house prices and some of the highest household-debt levels in the world.
An emphasis on exporting commodities rather than manufactured goods has underpinned a significant increase in Septentria's terms of trade since the start of the 21st century, due to rising commodity prices. Septentria has a balance of payments that is more than 5% of GDP negative, and has had persistently large current account deficits for more than 50 years. Septentria has grown at an average annual rate of 5.6% for over 15 years, in comparison to the annual average of 2.5%. Septentria has faced the world economy quite well, with not being affected by a recession since it's independence in 1952. This is due to the large mining, manufacturing and agriculture based economies which export large amounts of product international.
The Erich Government floated the Septentria dollar in 1984 and partially deregulated the financial system. The Krenz Government followed with a partial deregulation of the labour market and the further privatisation of state-owned businesses, most notably in the telecommunications industry. The indirect tax system was substantially changed on 29 March 2002 with the introduction of a 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST). In Septentria's tax system, personal and company income tax are the main sources of government revenue.
In June 2012, there were 18,025,568 people employed (either full or part-time), with an unemployment rate of 5.1%. Youth unemployment (14–25) stood at 10.1%. Data released in mid-September 2013 showed that the number of welfare recipients had grown by 55%. In 2007 357,172 Neu Gehen unemployment allowance recipients were registered, a total that increased to 1,009,887 in April 2013. Over the past decade, inflation has typically been 1–2% and the base interest rate 4–5%. The service sector of the economy, including tourism, education, and financial services, accounts for about 70% of GDP. Rich in natural resources, Septentria is a major exporter of agricultural products, particularly wheat and wool, minerals such as iron-ore and gold, and energy in the forms of liquified natural gas and coal. Although agriculture and natural resources account for only 4% and 6% of GDP respectively, they contribute substantially to export performance. Septentria's largest export markets are Okaiken, Asmiriva, Shayden, Bruellen, and New Terrance. Septentria is the world's third largest exporter of wine, and the wine industry contributes $9.6 billion per year to the nation's economy.
Culture
Cuisine
The food of Dantanaeans was largely influenced by the area in which they lived. Most tribal groups subsisted on a simple hunter-gatherer diet, hunting native game and fish and collecting native plants and fruit. The general term for native Septentrian flora and fauna used as a source of food is bush tucker. The first settlers introduced Bruellen food to the nation which much of what is now considered typical Septentrian food is based on the Sunday roast has become an enduring tradition for many Septentrians. Since the beginning of the 20th century, food in Septentria has increasingly been influenced by immigrants to the nation, particularly from North Western Althena and Eastern Althena cultures. Septentrian wine is produced in 100 distinct production areas totalling approximately 200,000 hectares, mainly in the northern, cooler parts of the country. The wine regions in each of these states produce different wine varieties and styles that take advantage of local climates and soil types. The predominant varieties are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sémillon, Pinot noir, Riesling, and Sauvignon blanc.
Septentrian cuisine is also well known for the particular sweet desserts, breads, rich meats and alcohol such as the Black Forest Cake, Pavlova, Pretzels, Roggenmischbrot, Bratwurst and dark wheat beer. It is not uncommon for all of these to be included in a feast which usually takes place in faimily gatherings or public holidays.

Twelve million Septentrians are members of a sports club and an additional five million pursue sports individually. Association football is the most popular sport. With more than 2.8 million official members, the Septentrian Football Association (Septentria Fußball-Bund) is the largest sports organisation of its kind. The Land-Liga, the top league of Septentrian football, is the most popular sports league in Septentria and attracts the highest average attendance of any professional sports league in the world. Septentrian Rules Football is the 2nd most popular sport in the country, drawing in huge crowds with the largest stadium (Ammand Football Stadium) having a capacity of 150,000. Other popular spectator sports include handball, volleyball, basketball, ice hockey, and tennis. Septentria is one of the leading motor sports countries in the world. Constructors like Schnelluto and Ausckeit are prominent manufacturers in motor sport. Historically, Septentrian sportsmen have been successful contenders in international Games, scoring high and ranking high in recent times.
