Insulo is a sovereign state and a Full Member of the United Sovereign Nations of the World. It consists of nineteen provinces spread across two main regions separated by the Maresian Straits and Ibresian Sea. The larger, northern region of the country is situated on Ibresian Peninsula of Northwestern Althena and contains fourteen provinces. This region, the traditional mainland of the country, shares land borders with Etrusque to the East and the countries of Batavia and Trevi to the North. The region is bounded by the Dacian Ocean to the west, the Ibresian Sea to the south, the Gulf of Insulo to the east, and the Vaspasian Sea to the north.
The Southern of the two regions, collectively known as Andalusia was part of the Kingdom of Andalusia and Mallano before being annexed by Insulo in 2011 and is much smaller, being made up of only three provinces. This region is located on the Andalusian Peninsula, which extends to the northwest from the southwestern arm of Althena. The Andalusian Region shares a land border with Mallano to the south and east and is bounded by the Dacian Ocean to the west and the Ibresian Sea to the north.
An additional two provinces exist outside these two regions. The province of Islas Maresas occupies the Maresian Islands that span the gap between Andalusia and mainland Insulo. The province of La Palma consists of the two westernmost islands of the Canarias Archipelago, situated to the northwest of the Insulonian mainland. Insulonian territory also includes the overseas possessions of Catalina and Casamos and Guayas and Malole.
The first evidence of modern humans on the Ibresian Peninsula has been dated to around 35,000 years ago. Little is known about the peoples that lived in the region prior to the arrival of Sinopian and Kananian colonists in the 5th and 6th centuries BCE, who are collectively referred to as the Ibresians, other than that their government was of a primitive, tribal nature. The Ibresian and Andalusian peninsulas came under Calibrian rule around 120 BCE, after the Calibrian conquest of Byrsa. It was under Calibrian control that the region began to be referred to as Insula. After the fall of the Calibrian Empire the region was controlled by various Brullanic Peoples before the South was conquered through Andalusia by Kabier-speaking peoples fleeing westward from the Rokes. The Ibresian Peninsula was first unified with the creation of the Ibresian Alliance in 1463 CE after the expulsion of the Kabiers into Andalusia. The constituent countries of the alliance were eventually joined to form Insulonian Kingdom in 1533 with the marriage of Maximino II of Insulo and Ana Maria I of Puertia. Insulo became an influential global empire in the early modern era, establishing numerous colonies in the New World. This spread Insulonian culture and language across the world and made Insulonian one of the most common languages in the world.
Recent Insulo has been characterized by a strong movement to bring the nation forward after the fall of the fascist Insulonian Federation in 1985, after which the first democratic government in Insulonian was created. Today, Insulo is governed by a Democratic Republic that places a large amount of power in the hands of the Parliament. The Insulonian Parliament unique in that it is currently the only tricameral legislatures in existence. Insulo is a developed country with high standards of living and a modern economy.
