History

The nation today known as Berg had quite a rough and complicated history, Bergenstein played a huge role. It started as a small group of tribes centered around the Wiez river. After the fall of the Calibrian Empire, these tribes began to expand outwards and develop into prosperous feudal kingdoms. Several wars, marriages, and unions took place between the Bergenstein kingdoms, leading to a more powerful united culture in the region. After the Renaissance, the feudalism in these kingdoms began to decline and trade began to incline. As the years went on, the Bergenstein kingdoms emerged as modernized powerful states. In 1855, the Treaty of Gartenburg unified the remaining Bergenstein kingdoms that had not joined the Brullen Federation. Bergenstein was now a united group of states prospering along with their neighbors. GAWYSTUFF The Liberation of Bergenstein commenced on 1st of April, 1952. ?? and Etruscan troops simultaneously invaded the country from both sides, driving out the Brullen soldiers and beginning to occupy the nation. At the end of the GAW, some parts of western Brullen were ceded to Bergenstein, and Bergenstein was free to, once again, govern itself. In the early 21st Century, Bergenstein fell into a state of civil war due to the large differnces in opinions on how the country should be governed. The bloodshed lead to an invasion by a coalition of foreign powers. This lead to the fall of Bergenstein and the creation of the Interim Bergen Federal Republic which was to become the Bergen Federal Republic but when the Weiz Party was elected into government the country restored it's monarchy and created a compromise between tradition and functionality.

History with Grand

In 1583 traders began trading intensively with Grand. The ties between Bergenstein and Grand got a lot stronger and as a result the royal families started to intermix with each other. [insert some more stuff]. When the First Khwint War (1772-1784) trouble started a major discussion started up about the right cause of action, this subsequently started the civil war in Bergenstein, The war of the twelve. These are how things played out in alliance terms, Duchy of Mantaines went with Berge, Woial went with Trierenstien, Tarlok went with Verana, Kamtal with Shwieset, Salemo with Coutony, Kumer Krak and Kilitie with Danskmarkensweg Litheniant, Zeint with Werdrecht, Erol with Brendenland, Orwak with Cellmradon, Temart with Miensburg, Monseil and New Wenneseux with Lorona. Very simple. After that messy affair and in Bergenstein no real boarder changes life went on. In the Second Khwint War Bergenstein allied with the United Kingdom of Grand, but unfortunately the war was lost mainly due to a lack of uniformity between the state’s military which is still present today. Bergenstein had to pay a large sum of money as compensation for the war to the victors.Third Khwint war went a little more successfully and this time with Grand won, good job a lot of money was spent on intelligence before the event. Bergenstein was officially omitted into the triple alliance in 1974 which only strengthened friendships.

Culture

Bergenstein is tucked away in northern Althena having a very pro national government system meaning that it was quite cut off from other cultures. The state system in Bergenstein was also a major factor in the culture, the system had cut the culture apart making different states culturally different. The historical separations from the rest of Althenia had also allowed the cultures of Bergenstein stay different. Religion was not a major part of a Bergenstein's life, religion unlike in other cultures was never see as a focal point to people, though it used religion as an excuse to build some of the worlds most beautiful buildings ever throughout history. Today most of these cultures remain but since the Civil War the country has opened to a more modern way.

Alcohol

Alcoholic drinks in Bergenstein are extremely popular, the favorites mainly coming from Bergenstein's own brewers but others from Abbasid and the IFK are seen as well. Bergenstein Beer is considered by the Bergenstein to be the best in the world and their contribution to a perfect world. Others may not say the same but it make up the majority of exports from Bergenstein; Abbasid being the biggest purchaser. Other products such as Bergenstein Wine and Bergenstein Cider are also rather popular in the national and international realm.

Architecture

Architecture in Bergenstein ranges vastly between the states. Bergensetein as a whole though boasts it's fine architecture from a wide range of periods of Adoinian history. In the later years Bergenstein has tended to build mimicking older designs, this passion for historical architecture has preserved many old centers and blocked the construction of post GAW tower blocks and other buildings of similar design that many believe to ruin a town.

Film

The Bergenstein film industry is one of the more successful aspects of Bergen economics producing many world hit films that have made millions of Sent for the major film companies. Bergentein films often portray historical films even more so war films due to the national policy of preservation. This means that settings are often very unspoilt making them ideal for period films and due to the large historical following historical props are abundant. This abundance of hardware makes filming such films much cheaper. Cinemas are also popular in Bergenstein due to the film industry however in recent years 5% of cinemas have closed down over the last 3 years with a further 10% expecting to soon. This decline is related to the growing online market both legal which still benefits the film industry however the growing black market has severely hindered the industry. The issue is global and is on the up.

Food

Food is another key element to Bergenstein Culture. The food in Bergenstein is well known for its heavy use of meat and salt. The food in many senses is similar to that of Brullen though a Bergensteiner would disagree. Bergenateiners regarded their food to be the best, though others naturally debated this, Bergensteiners take a great deal of care in ingredients and cooking methods. Bergenstein families often have personal recipes passed down from generation to the next. Food is not often bought out of season to ensure quality though some supermarkets do stock out of season goods. Bergenstein cuisine may focus on savory goods but does have some famous sweet dishes. Apfelstrudel being the most popular. Compared to modern Bergenstein the food consumed is very similar apart from the introduction of many foreign dishes.

Religion

The main two religions are Christianity and Islam. Islam was introduced by Abbasidi migrants setting up home in Bergenstein to open trade routs. Islam ever since arriving in the country had a strong hold, this is also backed up by Esdaad citizens who in the later years influxed into the country. Many mosques can been seen in Bergenstein as a result of such migrations. However throughout history religion has never been forced upon the population and the government stand is that is does not care about religion. If anything it encourages the population not to 'waste' time with religion and instead work. A statement in the 1650s was released by one of the Bergenstein states (not known which one it is but probably FlangarenTemplate:Citation needed) said that "The only good religion brings is that we have an excuse to show off our building skills."

Transportation

Railways

Railways first came to Bergenstein in 1935 which quickly developed to more than a local novelty to a standard way of transportation throughout Bergenstein. Originally the gauges varied but within a few years most railway lines excludint a few cut off lines the Rail network in Bergenstein operated on the Standard Gauge. Throughout the later 19th and early 20th century the rail network expanded everywhere covering the majority of the nation. In the 1960s steam trains were slowly replaced by more efficient and cheaper diesel locomotives. Much of the rail system was damaged in the Civil war due to tactical strikes but was repaied by February 2014.

Inner City Transit

Most cities and towns in Bergenstein have a form of inner city public transport supplied by the local authority. These are usually either trams, trolley busses, or normal busses. These services are usually cheap and cover the majority of the city. Unfortunatly the transport is known for it's lateness and poor accessibility for the disabled. The main cause of this is the use of very old rolling stock, some of which dates back to 1912. The use of old rolling stock though did attrack many tourists before the civil war and generally helpes the aesthetic value of the city/town.

Trams

Trams in Bergenstein run on the same gauge as the standard railways and do often have a connecting branch allowing for easy transport of rolling stock between locations. It also means that inter city (Interurban) tram services for nearby neighboring cities connecting them allowing for easy transport. Most inner city trams are electrified by overhead cables, very few are powered by other methods. Trams are one of the most popular methods of travel in cities and town because of their domination of the road and smooth ride. Though due to the need of tracks outer areas are normally served by buses.

Trolley Busses

alt text

Trolley busses are a cheap running alternative to standard busses as electricity is cheaper, though the overhead cables do need significant amounts of maintenance, especially in Bergenstein due to the old age of the network. Other advantages with hills and running performance made the vehicles ideal for inner city travel. However due to many cases of Silent Death, when the pedestrian does not hear the vehicle and therefore is hit by the bus; all busses have a minimum noise level, the levels varied between states. Trolley Buses are still one of the main modes of public transport.

Busses

Busses are used in places otherwise inaccessible, interstate travel is also common with busses. Busses are also the only type of publc transport that is, in some areas, privatised. It is estimated that over a quarter of the inner city population use buses. Template:Bergenstein topics
