The Kingdom of Trentannia, commonly known as Trentannia, is a nation in Western Althena. Metropolitan Trentannia borders the Sushili Sea to the north, Bruellen to the west, Sinope and Calibria to the south, and Lutha and Birani to the east. Trentannia is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy with its capital in Stretton, the nation's largest city and the main cultural and commercial center.

Etymology

The name "Trentannia" is derived from the Old Trentannian name Trenton, which comes from the tribe "Trents". The Trents were one of the Bruellanic tribes that settled in the area during the Antiquity. The Trents came initially from Southwestern Althena. According to the Oxford Trentannian Dictionary, the first known use of "Trentannia" to refer to the present-day territory occurs in 210 on Calibrian maps written as "Trentannium", and its modern spelling was first used in 1038.

Government

The Kingdom of Trentannia is, as its name suggests, a kingdom, but the power of the Trentannian monarch (currently King Charles V) is de facto entirely ceremonial. It reigns but does not govern. The executive power of the parliamentary monarchy is exercised on behalf of the King by the Prime Minister (currently Brandon Hedley), and other cabinet ministers. The Prime Minister is appointed by the King, he is not elected. The King must choose the leader who won the elections: the government may be overthrown at every legislative election. Like any parliamentary system, ministers are accountable to Parliament, which can overturn at any time.

The Trentannian government generally consists of seventeen to twenty-three Ministers (currently twenty-two) that form around the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, not to be confused with the department, which is the meeting of one hundred people: ministers, state secretaries, deputy secretaries of state and private parliamentary secretaries. Moreover, a phenomenon grows increasingly in Trentannia: Cabinet solidarity. That is to say that if the Prime Minister committed ministerial responsibility questioned by Parliament, it is not the only one to fall, his ministers also fall. The government takes part in the legislative process. Indeed, the House of Commons is arranged so that the government faces the opposition. The government may also offer texts to be discussed and voted on by the House. There is no law of separation between church and state in Trentannia: the monarch is also the head of the Trent Church.

Law and criminal justice

Trentannia has a distinct system of law based on the principles of common law. The Supreme Court is the highest court for criminal and civil cases in the country.

Economy

The Trents were the first to enter the era of the Industrial Revolution in particular by developing, like most countries in the process of industrialization at the time, heavy industries such as shipbuilding, mining, production of steel and textiles. The Kingdom has created an overseas market for Trentannian products allowing it to dominate the international market during the nineteenth century. However, as a result of the industrialization of other countries and the loss of jobs in agriculture, Trentannia has seen its economic advance decline relative to others. As a result, heavy industry has slowly declined throughout the twentieth century. However, the service sector has grown significantly and now weighs almost 73% of Trentannia's GDP .

The tertiary sector of the country is dominated by financial services, especially in the fields of banking and insurance. Stretton is the largest financial center in the world, particularly through the Stretton Stock Exchange, the Stretton International Financial Futures and Options Exchange and Lloyd's of Stretton all in the City, roughly equivalent to Patras in Braavos. The capital also has the highest concentration of headquarters of foreign banks. In recent decades, a financial center on the banks of the Thames has developed in the Docklands which then hosted the offices of HSBC and Barclays banks. There are a number of multinationals not based in Trentannia, having chosen Stretton as their Western Althenan or abroad headquarters; for example the largest financial group in the world, the Acadian Citigroup.

Tourism is a major part of the Trentannian economy, Trentannia is the seventh largest tourist destination with 30.4 million visitors in 2012. The secondary sector, meanwhile, largely declined since the Great Adonian War. It is still, however, an important part of the Trentannian economy. The Trentannian motor industry accounts for a major part, however much diminished since major takeovers by Calibrian and Bruellan companies. The chemical and pharmaceutical industry is also powerful with the second and sixth biggest names in the pharmaceutical industry in the world respectively, GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca, both based in Trentannia.

Trentannia has significant energy resources: coal, gas, oil, etc., although these last two are decreasing. The primary energy production is responsible for 10% of Trentannia's GDP, much higher than most industrialized countries share.

Demographics

In the 2012 census the total population of Trentannia was 86,962,591. It is the largest in Western Althena, the ?? largest in Adonia. Between 2001 and 2011 the population increased by an average annual rate of approximately 0.7 per cent. This compares to 0.3 per cent per year in the period 1991 to 2001 and 0.2 per cent in the decade 1981 to 1991. The 2012 census also confirmed that the proportion of the population aged 0–14 has nearly halved (31 per cent in 1911 compared to 18 in 2011) and the proportion of older people aged 65 and over has more than trebled (from 5 to 16 per cent). It has been estimated that the number of people aged 100 or over will rise steeply to reach over 700,000 by 2080.

In 2012 the average total fertility rate (TFR) across Trentannia was 1.92 children per woman. While a rising birth rate is contributing to current population growth, it remains considerably below the 'baby boom' peak of 2.95 children per woman in 1964, below the replacement rate of 2.1, but higher than the 2001 record low of 1.63. In 2012, 47.3% of births in Trentannia were to unmarried women. A government figure estimated that there are 4.1 million homosexual people in Trentannia comprising 7 per cent of the population.

Ethnic groups

Trentannia has a history of small-scale non-white immigration, with Portsmouth having the oldest Black population in the country dating back to at least the 1640s, and the oldest Peilanese community in Western Althena, dating to the arrival of Peilanese seamen in the 18th century. Since 1953, substantial immigration from Neridea, the Central and Eastern Althena has been a legacy of ties forged by the Trentannian Empire. Migration from Southwestern Althenan countries since the 21st century has resulted in growth in these population groups, especially Lechians. Trentannian has the largest Afro-Althenan community of any Western country.

In the 2012 census, 77% have responded being of White ethnicity, 13% of Afro-Althenan ethnicity, 7% of Central and Eastern Althenan, 2% mixed and 1% of other ethnicity.

Languages

Trentannia's official language is Trentannian. It is estimated that 80% of Trentannia's population are monolingual Trentannian speakers. 5.5% of the population are estimated to speak languages brought to the UK as a result of relatively recent immigration. Northern Althenan languages, including Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi, Hindi and Gujarati, are the largest grouping and are spoken by 2.7% of Trentannia's population. According to the 2012 census, Lechian has become the third largest language spoken in Trentannia and has 600,000 speakers. There is a large Bruellan-speaking minority in the southwest of the country, due to the historical ties with Bruellen, especially when Trentannia was in the Bruellan Empire. Etruscan and Bruellan are the two most commonly taught second languages in Trentannia.

Religion

Forms of Christianity have dominated religious life in what is now Trentannia for over 1,400 years. Although a majority of citizens still identify with Christianity in many surveys, regular church attendance has fallen dramatically since the middle of the 20th century, while immigration and demographic change have contributed to the growth of other faiths, most notably Islam. This has led some commentators to variously describe Trentannia as a multi-faith, secularised, or post-Christian society.

There is a relatively large Dodekatheist community in southern Trentannia, near the border with Sinope. In the 2012 census 71.6% of all respondents indicated that they were Christians, with the next largest faiths (by number of adherents) being Dodekatheism (7.0%), Islam (2.8%), Hinduism (1.0%), Sikhism (0.6%), Judaism (0.5%), Shakyan (0.3%) and all other religions (0.3%). 15% of respondents stated that they had no religion.

Music

Various styles of music are popular in Trentannia from indigenous folk music to heavy metal. Notable composers of classical music from Trentannia and the countries that preceded it include William Byrd, Henry Purcell, Sir Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, Sir Arthur Sullivan (most famous for working with the librettist Sir W. S. Gilbert), Ralph Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten, pioneer of modern Trentannian opera. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is one of the foremost living composers and current Master of the King's Music. Trentannia is also home to world-renowned symphonic orchestras and choruses such as the TBC Symphony Orchestra and the Stretton Symphony Chorus. Notable conductors include Sir Simon Rattle, John Barbirolli and Sir Malcolm Sargent. Some of the notable film score composers include John Barry, Clint Mansell, Mike Oldfield, John Powell, Craig Armstrong, David Arnold, John Murphy, Monty Norman and Harry Gregson-Williams. George Frideric Handel, although born Bruellan, was a naturalised Trentannian citizen and some of his best works, such as Messiah, were written in the Trentannian language. Andrew Lloyd Webber has achieved enormous worldwide commercial success and is a prolific composer of musical theatre, works which have dominated Stretton's West End for a number of years and have travelled to Braavos and Cecina.

Trentannia is also the birthplace of the modern-day Blues music genre. No specific year can be cited as the origin of the blues, largely because the style evolved over a long period and existed in approaching its modern form before the term blues was introduced, before the style was thoroughly documented. Ethnomusicologist Gerhard Kubik traces the roots of many of the elements that were to develop into the blues back to the Neridean continent, the "cradle of the blues". One important early mention of something closely resembling the blues comes from 1901, when an archaeologist in Cambridge described the songs of black workers which had lyrical themes and technical elements in common with the blues. There are a large variety of blues that has developed in the Afro-Althenan community in Trentannia, notably Swamp Blues, in the north of the country, where swamps are common. Blues has evolved from an unaccompanied vocal music of poor black laborers into a wide variety of styles and subgenres, with regional variations across the Kingdom of Trentannia.

Sports

Major sports, including association football, tennis, rugby union, rugby league, golf, boxing, rowing and cricket, originated or were substantially developed in Trentannia and the states that preceded it. With the rules and codes of many modern sports invented and codified in late 19th-century Victorian Trentannia, in 2012, the President of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, stated; "This great, sports-loving country is widely recognized as the birthplace of modern sport. It was here that the concepts of sportsmanship and fair play were first codified into clear rules and regulations. It was here that sport was included as an educational tool in the school curriculum".
