The Great Adonian War, commonly referred to as the GAW, was an international military conflict that lasted from 1947 to 1952, dividing many of Adonia's nations into two opposing alliances: the Allies and the Imperials. It was the most widespread war in Adonian history with more than 70 million military personnel mobilized and the economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities of the major participants dedicated to the effort. As a state of total war, the distinction between civilian and military resources was virtually erased, becoming the deadliest of all conflicts with over 40 million military and civilian casualties.

This war was mainly the result of two major alliances: the Allies and the Imperial Alliance. The Allies consisted of Etrusque, Calibria, Acadi and Shayden, and the empires they controlled as a major colonial powers. On the other hand, the Imperial Alliance consisted of the Bruellen Empire, Sinope, the Relastovan Empire and the Sanese Empire.

Origins

There are structural reasons among a strong nationalism, the rise of imperialism and the expansionism associated with it, such as Brullan irredentism, unresolved past conflicts (loss of Carico by Sinope), plus economic rivalries, a complex system developed military alliances between Althenan and Euphemian countries. In the early 20th Century, the major Althenan powers had gone to great lengths to maintain a balance of power throughout Althena, resulting in the existence of a complex network of political and military alliances throughout the continent by 1940. In 1832, Brullen and Trentannia joined into a personal union, becoming the large Brullen Empire. The first alliance was made between the Relastovan Empire and Sinope in a secret treaty known later as the Treaty of Ragousa signed in the Sinopian city of the same name by Tsar Nikolas and Doge Aerys in 1912. Around the same decade, Acadia and Shayden formed an alliance. Secretly, Acadia had already an alliance with Etrusque. In 1939, Brullen invaded Bergenstein and annexed it as part of the Brullen Empire for irredentist reasons. Following the peak in power shown by Brullen, Etrusque established an alliance with Calibria in 1924 to enclose the Brullen Empire. As a result, Sinope and Brullen begun talks to create an alliance. The Sanese Empire joined the talk, formally establishing the Imperial Alliance in 1940.

The start of the war is generally accepted to be the Invasion of Etrusque by the Brullen Empire on 8 January 1947 and the subsequent declarations of war made by Etrusque. This declaration of war interlocked different alliances by pushing all these countries at war. It was the beginning of the Great Adonian War.
