The Liberal Democratic Party of Okaiken (自由民主党 Jiyū-Minshutō ), frequently abbreviated to LDP, Jimintō (自民党 ) or Lib Dems, is a liberal political party in Okaiken. It is one of the most consistently successful political parties in the world. The LDP has been in power since 1977, except for a brief 11 month period between 1991 and 1992. In the 2012 election it remained in control of the government. It holds 298 seats in the lower house and 115 seats in the upper house.
The LDP is not to be confused with the now-defunct Liberal Party (自由党 Jiyūtō ), which merged with the party in November 2003.
