Duty's Call, released in 1998

Duty's Call is a Military First Person Shooter/Action video game series published by Lisieux Gaming, a Shayden-based entertainment company. First created with a title of the same name in 1998, Duty's Call has seen several released over the years, mostly pertaining to the Great Adonian War where the protagonist is on the side of the Allies. One exception, "Duty's Call: The Empire"(2005) experimented with putting the player in the shoes of a Bruellanic soldier on the side of the Bruellan Empire. The game received mixed reviews where half enjoyed experiencing history from a different perspective with others denounced it for having players fight for the 'bad guys'. Today, seven installments have been released in total with an eighth nearing it's release date.

Summary

Players take the role of Private First Class Adrian Harper of the Shaydian Army. The game begins with a short history recap of the start of the Great Adonian War and it's spread across West Althena. First playable mission opens with the Shayden Invasion of the Bruellen Empire by amphibious landings in occupied Batavia. PFC. Harper is with the first groups to go ashore and general confusion sets in as the landings happen relatively without a hitch or resistance. Harper and his squad are then ambushed by the Bruellen who had hidden in wait followed by a counter attack. It is up to PFC Harper and the rest to hold the beach for the rest of the landings. Harper and his squad eventually defend the beach with the help of Allied air support after destroying Bruellen AA guns a short ways inland. As the game progresses Harper continues his fight through Batavia, destroying a Bruellen supply depot, capturing an Airfield and eventually liberating the Batavian capital city. Many of Harper's fellow characters are lost along the way. The end of the game has Harper crossing the border into Bruellen itself in a massive assault by combined Allied forces, however Harper is wounded in the battle and appears to be captured.

Review

Duty's Call was given resounding approval by major critics, at the time claiming it a pioneering leap in video game technology and mechanics. The developer was also lauded for staying true to many historical accuracies and spending so much research into the game's content. These positive reviews, coupled with massive sales spurred the company to start development on the game's sequel.
